Do you know the difference between a rollergirl and a snack food?

Crackerjack vs. Frito Lay (via Texas Rollergirls)

"Plano-based snack company Frito-Lay North America, Inc. recently put the corporate kibosh on local rollergirl Colleen "Crackerjack" Bell's attempt to trademark her nickname for roller derby competitions. In their opposition, filed April 8, Frito-Lay essentially alleges that their tasty caramel popcorn treat runs the risk of being confused with a bunch of tough ladies who try to bruise each other while skating around a circular rink."Austinist

Frito-Lay claims in their opposition of the roller derby-specific trademark that Crackerjack is merely descriptive, not a proper name; they claim there is a great likelihood of confusion between the candied popcorn and the rollergirl; that use of the word crackerjack by a rollergirl dilutes the connection between the words Cracker Jack and candy popcorn, and/or tarnishes the image of the snack; and finally they claim that Crackerjack is falsely suggesting a connection between herself and candied popcorn, and the insinuation is causing harm to Frito-Lay.

Crackerjack talks about her trademark on Austin Fox and CBS affiliates:

The story has also gotten coverage in the Madison, WI local press

Balderdash. Or should we say, Poppycock. If you still don’t get it, watch this:

We think that people are generally smart enough to tell the difference between a rollergirl and a snack. If we’re right, please tell Frito-Lay and encourage them to drop this opposition. http://www.fritolay.com/about-us/contact-us.html

The City Pages has a good story on tryouts for the Minnesota Roller Girls.

But as I watched them celebrate their new members and prepare for the October 18 season opener, it all made sense. These women are hardcore, and not just because they beat each other up on roller skates. From their ramshackle beginning in 2005 to the professional athletes they are today, people have always found the Roller Girls appealing for the same reason: They make no apologies for being themselves.

Rat City Rollergirls vs. Starbucks

Seattle P-I

The Rat City Rollergirls of Seattle are this close to being preserved for time immemorial in a video game.

While the game developers do their thing, the all-female roller derby league has to trademark the logo that it has used since the league formed in 2004.

It seemed simple enough. But after the league filed its paperwork in Washington, it realized a challenge: There's another entity in town sporting a round logo with two stars, sans-serif font and a babe in the middle.

Starbucks has asked the league to change its logo, said Quinn Heraty, a New York lawyer representing the Rat City Rollergirls and its national association, The Women's Flat Track Derby Association.

"The issue is with the shape of the logo, including what they're calling concentric circles," she said. "They're saying that the dimensions of the circles are too close to their own. ... I mean, come on, circles and portraits? Big deal. Starbucks didn't invent that."

Roller Derby T-shirt Threat to Air Security

The Sun UK

A TOURIST was told to turn his T-shirt inside-out at an airport — as a picture of two guns on it was deemed a SECURITY RISK.

Dave Osborne, 21, was bound for Newark, New Jersey, when guards hauled him out of the queue for his Guns N Rollers T-shirt.

They told him the two pistols on the front could constitute a security risk and upset passengers.

The Guns & Rollers (of the Rose City Rollers, Portland,OR) team logo features two crossed pistols, in a parody of the band Guns & Roses' iconic graphic.

Heartland Havoc: Day Two Results

WFTDA Eastern Regionals

Windy City 94 - Madison 63

Detroit 99 - Minnesota 77

Gotham 139 - Philly 81

Carolina 98 - Providence 55

Hurt Reynolds:

Yesterday's quarterfinal matchups blew the doors right off Battelle Hall, as the top two seeds were each eliminated in their first bouts. Today, all bets are off. I can't get anybody to make any predictions. The quality of play is very high, and all the teams have *heart* turned up to 11. I'm gonna say something right now to the WFTDA West Region's Texas Shootout qualifiers: don't get too comfortable. If you don't believe me, ask Minnesota and Madison. Western dominance should no longer be assumed... the final four from the East are playing to win.
